With reference to your letter of 12th Ultimo, on the subject of the defalcations in the Colonial Chest at Hong Kong I am authorised by the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury to transmit to you the enclosed copy of a letter from this Board addressed to the Under Secretary's Solicitor on 24th and of his reply dated 28th Ultimo. I am also to request that you will state to the Duke of Newcastle that Their Lordships are of opinion that legal proceedings against Mr. W. T. Bridges the Colonial Treasurer, ought not be suspended until the receipt of further information from Hong Kong as to the result of the proceedings.
